In-depth Program | Photography Foundations

Session outline

The camera and the image: camera, lens and film; aperture, shutter speed and sensitivity; camera operation and loading film.

Light and exposure: metering and exposure choices in different lighting conditions; exploring depth of field and movement.

Photography as a visual language: framing, viewpoint, distance, light and shadow. Shooting a roll for the development sessions.

From photography to development: processing stages and materials; time, temperature and agitation; loading a reel and planning the workflow.

Guided film development: processing the exposed films, from preparing chemicals to washing and hanging negatives to dry, while recording working data.

Film lab orientation: preparing a workstation, using equipment and chemicals, safety, cleaning and closing down, booking work time and reporting faults. This included session provides the orientation required for independent lab use.

From the negative to independent work: reviewing negatives, identifying problems, a guided final exercise and individual feedback for continued practice.

By the end of the program, participants will have a foundation in operating an analog camera, metering light and developing black-and-white film. Completion of the program and orientation, together with demonstration of safe working practices, enables independent lab use in accordance with its procedures.

Darkroom printing and qualification for independent use of the darkroom are covered in a separate program: In-depth Darkroom Printing.

Session dates

Registration and participation

One registration covers all seven sessions in a fixed cohort. Dates are fixed. Missed sessions cannot be rescheduled or made up through the booking system.

Registration closes at 18:00 on the day before the cohort starts, or earlier at the instructor’s discretion. The current registration status is shown with each cohort. Our team confirms whether the cohort will run.

When the cohort is full, join the waiting list through the booking form. Our team may contact you about an available place or registration for the next cohort. There is no automatic transfer or guaranteed place.

Independent use of the film lab or darkroom requires completion of the orientation for that room, either separately or within an in-depth program, and familiarity with its working and safety procedures. Training and approval are checked by our team. Orientation to one room does not qualify you to use the other independently.
